Well developed breast cancers nearly always show up clearly on mammograms. Unfortunately, there will always be the odd one that is missed or doesn’t show up. With early stage breast cancer, when there may be no lump, you can usually see patterns on the mammogram that suggest a breast cancer may be there. The skill and experience comes in reading the different patterns and deciding which might be cancer. Also, some cancers do not show these clear signs on the mammogram. You should therefore always tell your GP about a suspicious lump even if you have recently had a mammogram. |
